Ed Taylor Construction completes new YMCA in LargoTampa Bay Newswire - August 8, 2014
The freestanding facility marks a significant expansion from Y’s previous location
Largo, Fla. (August 8, 2014) – Ed Taylor Construction has completed a new 36,000-square-foot YMCA facility in the Bardmoor area of Largo, marking a major expansion from the YMCA’s previous area location.
The new Bardmoor Y replaces the YMCA’s former 12,000-square-foot Largo facility, which was housed in the Baycare Outpatient Center. With triple the space, the new facility allows for a wide range of activities, features and programming, including a Y Preschool Academy.
Ed Taylor built the exterior using the tilt-wall method, which involves forming and pouring concrete for walls horizontally on a casting bed or the slab. Then, the walls are “tilted” to a vertical position with a crane, providing load-bearing support for the structure. For interior walls, concrete block was used because it is sturdier than drywall.
Other features of the building include a full-size gymnasium, locker rooms, group exercise and spin rooms, a health and wellness center, Kid Zone, early learning preschool center and a café complete with a Tropical Smoothie facility.
Ed Taylor was hired by Harrod Properties, the developer for the YMCA project, to build the new facility. As the general contractor, Ed Taylor oversaw a number of subcontractors such as Ripa for the site work, Colwill Engineering for the mechanical and electrical engineering design, Peter Gaunt Construction for the masonry and Hufcor for the movable walls in the gymnasium.
The new Y will open to the public on Monday, Aug. 11. In addition to the building’s amenities, the Y now has the capacity to offer new youth development programming and expanded options for adult health programs.
“Our project superintendent did an outstanding job managing our subcontractors to make sure the YMCA project was completed on time and without any major challenges,” said Matt Jackson, project manager with Ed Taylor. “This new facility is going to have a significant impact on the Largo community, and we are honored to work with the YMCA.”
The new Bardmoor YMCA is located at 8495 Bryan Dairy Road, Largo, Fla. 33777.
